World Ranking System
Individual Events
The World Sailing Rankings for Olympic Classes are administered by World Sailing. Every year in November the World Sailing Rankings Sub-Committee meet to review the method of calculation of the Rankings and to grade events to be included in the Rankings.
Ranking points are calculated using the following method:
Ranking Points = GxEx(N-P+1)/N
Where
G = Event Grade
E = Event Rank
N = Number of Entries
P = Position in regatta
The Grading Criteria for Ranked Events is defined in Regulation 27.1.
Competitors will only receive ranking points from events that fully comply with the Regulations.
The dates and grading will be confirmed by the WS Executive which will endeavour to avoid conflicting dates and to ensure the Regulations determining how many of each grade of event may take place per contintent for each class.
The following Grades apply:
- 200-points - Sailing World Cup, Olympic Class World Championships, Sailing World Championships;
- 100-points - Olympic Class World Championships (not-compliant with 200-point criteria), Olympic Class Continental Championships and other major international events using Olympic equipment;
- 50-points - Olympic Class Continental Championships, other international events using Olympic equipment (not compliant with 100-point criteria).
Additional criteria:
- The Sailing World Cup Final is a 200 point event (from 2015 onwards)
- Competitors may count 3 Sailing World Cup 200 point events (i.e. rounds and / or final)
- Tie breaks should be broken by the rank of the relevant competitor in the last published rankings
- Regional Games may be included as 100 or 50 point events. The major Continental Regional Games (Pan Am, Asian, All African, European, Oceania) will be 100 pointers, if they exist and if they include sailing.
- At selected elite events nationality requirements will apply.
Competitors may count their two most recent world championship regattas to their rankings points total.
Competitors will be able to count points from two further 200 points with their remaining tallies coming from 100 or 50 point regattas. No competitor points tally can exceed 1,000 points.
Each competitor counts their best 6 results over the previous 12 Months. They may however include the two previous annual World Championship results. The time period is calculated on a rolling basis from the date that rankings were published.
Mixed Team Relay Events
Formula Kite Mixed Team Relay Continental Championships will be graded 100 points, Formula Kite Mixed Team Relay World Championships 200 points.
Official Team Relay National Championships of IKA full members may be graded 50 points after prior application and approval by IKA.
All other mixed team relay events may be graded 20 points after prior application and approval by IKA.
HOW DOES IT WORK - MIXED TEAM RELAY WORLD RANKINGS ?
Each competitor counts their best three results of the team they have been competing in over the previous 24 months. The two year period is calculated on a rolling basis (from the ranking calculation date to the same date two years before).
100% of competitors at a regatta receive ranking points with first place receiving 200, 100, 50 or 20 points depending on the grade.
The World Rankings are mainly used for qualification and seeding purposes.
Future World and European championships may require a minimum amount of ranking points to enter the regatta.
HOW THE POINTS ARE CALCULATED - MIXED TEAM RELAY WORLD RANKINGS

The Ranking Points are then "aged", which gives most recent results a higher importance than older results.
